The sinking of the SS Nordnorge stands as a poignant chapter in the harrowing saga of the Rasmussen family's wartime experiences. Departing from Fredrikstad on March 17, 1944, loaded with building materials and essential supplies, the Nordnorge's journey was abruptly interrupted by tragedy.

As recounted in the court records, the ship had embarked on its voyage with a crew of thirteen men, including Chief Engineer Hilmar Rasmussen. Just off the coast of Honningsvag on Ytre-Stadtlandet, tragedy struck on the morning of March 24, 1944. Witnesses described a sudden and violent explosion that shattered the tranquility of the sea, plunging the vessel into chaos.

The testimonies of survivors Alfred Eriksen and Peder Johnsen offer haunting insights into the chaos that ensued. Eriksen, a midshipman from Veggen in Ankenes, recounted the moment the explosion rocked the ship, plunging the cabin into darkness and filling it with smoke. With courage born of desperation, Eriksen leaped into the sea, clinging to drifting debris as the ship rapidly sank beneath the waves.

Similarly, Johnsen, also a midshipman from Veggen, found himself thrust into a nightmare as the explosion tore through the vessel. Despite the chaos, he managed to find a makeshift flotation device amidst the wreckage, clinging to it until rescued by a passing boat.

Tragically, not all aboard were as fortunate. Sailor Sigurd Leif Gabrielsen, born in 1914 in Kjeldebotn, perished in the disaster. Witnesses recalled his valiant efforts to urge others to safety before succumbing to the sea's embrace.

The heroic efforts of local fishermen, particularly Jakob Strand from Stadtvagen, underscored the resilience of communities in the face of tragedy. Risking their own safety, these brave souls ventured into the maelstrom to rescue survivors, demonstrating the indomitable spirit of humanity in the darkest of hours.

In the aftermath of the disaster, the grief-stricken families of the fallen were left to grapple with the enormity of their loss. For Chief Engineer Hilmar Rasmussen's loved ones, including his wife Bertha and their six children, the sinking of the Nordnorge marked another devastating chapter in their wartime odyssey.

The sinking of the SS Nordnorge serves as a poignant reminder of the human cost of war and the resilience of the human spirit in the face of unimaginable adversity. As we honor the memory of those lost at sea, may their courage and sacrifice never be forgotten.
